About

What is the M113K

The M113K is a 5.4 liter supercharged V8. The K stands for Kompressor, which is German for supercharged. Each one is hand built by a single AMG technician who signs a plaque on the supercharger when they are done.

The supercharger is a twin screw positive displacement unit manufactured by IHI, mounted at the top of the engine in the valley between the cylinder banks. It builds boost instantly with no lag, so the torque is there the moment you get on the throttle. In 2005, IHI updated the design to add a coating to the impeller surfaces. The SL55 AMG also received a larger throttle body with this revision.

The engine runs a single overhead camshaft per bank with three valves per cylinder, two intake and one exhaust. Each cylinder has two spark plugs. The block and heads are aluminum alloy. Cam timing is fixed.

Vehicles

W211·2003–2006

Available in sedan and estate (S211) body styles. Produces 469 hp at 6,100 rpm and 516 lb-ft at 2,650 rpm. Output is lower than other M113K applications because the W211 chassis required a smaller-diameter, longer exhaust system. The 7G-Tronic introduced in the same generation could not handle the M113K's torque output, so the 5G-Tronic was retained. Of the 14,437 total units built, roughly 10 percent were estate variants.

C219·2006

The C219 CLS-Class is built on the W211 E-Class platform, sharing its floorpan, suspension geometry, and powertrain with the E55 AMG. The CLS55 AMG was offered exclusively as a 2006 model year vehicle. The C219 body introduces a pillarless greenhouse with no B-pillar between the door frames, and a substantially lower roofline than the standard E-Class. Power output is identical to the W211 E55 AMG.

SL55 AMG

493–510 hp
R230·2002–2008

The R230 SL-Class launched in 2001 with the SL55 AMG variant arriving in 2002. Features an electrohydraulic folding retractable hardtop, designated the Vario-Roof, which stows in the trunk and deploys in approximately 16 seconds. Active Body Control hydraulic suspension is standard. Power output is higher than the E55 AMG due to a less restrictive exhaust routing within the R230 body. The SL55 received a larger throttle body as part of the 2005 IHI supercharger update. Output rose again for the 2006 facelift, to 510 hp and 531 lb-ft, on a larger 80mm throttle body and a revised intake. That figure is standard on the facelift cars and is not tied to the optional P30 Performance Package, which covers the raised speed limiter, an additional oil cooler, and the larger brakes and differential.

W220·2003–2006

The W220 S55 AMG received the supercharged M113K for the 2003 model year, replacing a naturally aspirated 5.5-liter variant. It is the largest and heaviest vehicle in the M113K lineup. Active Body Control hydraulic suspension is standard. The C215 CL55 AMG shares the same platform and powertrain.

C215·2003–2006

A two-door coupe built on the W220 S-Class platform with a slightly shortened wheelbase. The C215 body uses aluminum and composite panels and shares its engine, transmission, and Active Body Control suspension directly with the W220 S55 AMG. Production spanned the full W220 generation.

W463·2005–2011

The only M113K application built on a body-on-frame platform. The W463 retains a solid front axle, live rear axle, and three locking differentials carried over from the military-derived G-Wagen. The supercharged M113K replaced the naturally aspirated M113 in the G55 AMG for the 2005 model year. Production continued through 2011, when the G63 AMG replaced it with the M157 twin-turbocharged V8.
